Priorities That Encourage Health

1.     Engage in regular physical activity that meets/exceeds current guidelines

2.     Maintain a healthy body weight and body composition

3.     Get sufficient durations of high-quality sleep

4.     Avoid smoking and the use/abuse of other addictive substances

5.     Seek medical care for a limited set of routinely monitored parameters

6.     Learn about and apply self-management strategies for pain

7.     Develop and maintain meaningful social connections with others

I like all of these 7 priorities, and they remain universal despite age! I think everyone can and should exercise. The trick is to find the appropriate amount of stress that produces a positive adaptation. This could mean a 7 mile run for an individual who has been training continously to run a marathon, or it could mean a 5 minute walk around the backyard for a person who has limited physical capabilities. We should all try to maintain a healthy bodyweight by eating healthy lean proteins and lots of vegetables as well. Sleep is extremely important for all people regardless of age. A dark, well ventilated and cool room helps, so does turning off your cell phone! Clearly smoking and drinking excess alcohol have objective, negative effects on the system as a whole, so avoiding and partaking in moderation is key. Regular visits to the doctor are important especially as we age, since we are more likely to develop chronic conditions that require care the older we get. And learning to deal with the pain that comes with these conditions, both mentally and physically, are crucial to maintain happiness. Last, we are social creatures. We need interaction as kids, adults, and as seniors. Have regular connections with neighbors, friends, and most importantly, family.
